During the construction of a store room to our
kitchen we found pieces of a prehistoric skeleton and a small
stone axe.
Archeologists from Mi Museo
in Granada made an excavation at the site and concluded that it must
have been a 9-12 years old child of a wealthy family who lived about
800 years ago.
The archeologists Juan
Bosco Moroney and Humberto León employed their visit to other
parts of the community and talked to our experienced neighbor. It is
very probable that before the Spanish conquest in the 16th century
the area housed a big village.
What caught their attentions
the most, were the reports about statues made of stone, which have
been found in different parts of El Pochote, the larger one even
within the property of Flor de Pochote. Up until now such stone
figures have only been found on the islands of the Lake Nicaragua.
Unfortunately, the major
part of the archeological findings have been removed from the
community, or people have used the stones to build their houses.
Mi Museo will now, in
cooperation with the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture, evaluate
the possibilities of making further investigations and excavations
in the area.
