| Behind a road bend along the highway
between La Concepción and San Marcos you will find a little dirty pond,
which contains water all year round. A permanent water supply in this
area with loose volcanic soil, is a unique event and it is no wonder that close to this well the
oldest settlements of Nicaragua
have been found. Soon the Sapasmapa well became a central theme in the
conflicts between the tribes of what today are San Marcos and La
Concepción.
Untill installation of running water in the surrounding communities,
the well was used by the population to wash chlothes, and even for
drinking. Basins were build to collect the water, and the remains of
these can still be seen in the place. The first registered settlement was in the La Cruz suburb of San
Marcos, where many archeological pieces have been found. |
