Catarina and the "Laguna de Apoyo"

Without doubt Catarina has one of the most precious viewpoints of Nicaragua. The Eastern outskirts of the town are resting over the edge of the crater of a collapsed volcano. About 400 meter below your feet, you will appreciate the large Apoyo Lagoon, and behind it the Lake Nicaragua and the Mombacho Volcano.

At the viewpoint the local people has understood, as nowhere else in Nicaragua, to take advantage of their tourist attraction. Already at the highway you can see plant nurseries, and passing town more plants are offered for sale, as well as handicrafts, ceramics and furniture. At the viewpoint itself there are a couple of restaurants, horses for rent, marimba music and a lot more, as new inventions are made constantly.

The lagoons water is clean and suited for bathing.

The entrance to the beach is from Masaya, or from the Granada highway, but you cannot climb down from Catarina. Public transportation is scarce.
There are even a few hostels at the beach, but it is recommended to plan your trip, and make reservations.
