Land use at Flor de Pochote

Goose guarding the entrance of Flor de Pochote Beside the tourist facilities, in Flor de Pochote you will find a variety of farming and forestry. Our principal products are fruits and wood, and as a complement we have a little production of animals.

The farm is managed at the basis of organic principles, among others we intend to:

  • avoid all use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers
  • employ trees in all agricultural systems
  • shade control in forested areas to allow the presence of herbs and grasses that protect the soil from erosion
  • make compost of our organic waste
  • produce food and firewood for internal consumption at the center

Basic facts about the farm:

Total area 9.6 hectares Avocado and orange trees
Height above sea level: 240-270 meters
Soil: Young volcanic soils, generally fertile, but in places too sandy
Historical use: Until 1998, grassland and annual crops.
Rainfall About 1550 mm a year (range 1150-2000),
6 month of dry season (mid Nov - mid May)
Climate Semi-dry tropical

The green areas in the map below are dedicated only to forest activities, and in the brownish-yellow areas the forest trees are slowly taking over the place from the fruit trees. Totaling the areas with forest and 'getting forest' we count 7.4 hectares, or 78% of the farm. The fruit trees dominate 16% or 1.5 hectares.

Within the farm 3 hiking trails are marked, in order for our visitors to find their way around. (Click for details)
You can easily walk around on your own. We also provide guides and study materials.
