Our farm

Rosario riding horse in front of restaurant In 1998 we bought a farm in the outskirts of Masatepe and settled here, because we liked the area and because the farm land was well suited for making resarch into Nicaraguan forestry. Resently the idea evolved to share this beautiful place and our knowledge of the local area with others from near and far, and in late 2005 the Ecotouristic Center Flor de Pochote welcomed its first guests. We are still building and exploring new ways to use our land and enjoy the interest received so far.

The name 'Flor de Pochote'

Pochote is the name of a very special local tree. Most people in Nicaragua know the tree for its precious wood. In the region its wood has been valued as high as mahogany and most bigger trees have been exploited decades ago. However, in the steep slopes north at the north of our property several old species have survived, and living close to these thorny giants, we have had the opportunity to observe that they are much more than 'just a precious wood'.

Rosario soon got fascinated of the lonely flowers that can be seen spread out at the leafless crown during the dry season. Due to the dense cover of aggressive thorns, you will not be able to pick flowers from the tree, and it can only be enjoyed during a few hours after it has fallen to the ground. Soon it becomes red and appears as strange hairs spread on the soil.

We felt that our hills with the precious view never had gotten the attention it deserved, just as the overlooked flowers of the pochote. This gave us the idea to name our center Flor de Pochote.
