Fruits

In Flor de Pochote we have counted 28 kinds of fruit trees, palms or cactuses, from which we can get ingredients for beverages, jam, cakes, etc.

Not al of the trees have reached the age of producing fruits yet, and not all fruits will success within our organic production scheme, though. But anyhow, we have a lot of fruits, and most of the year we offer a broad variety of fresh products from our orchards. And when our own harvest is insufficient, we supplement with products from the local area. What is not available in El Pochote is found in the neighbour municipalities La Concepción and Ticuantepe, which are specialized in fruit production, such as pineaples and oranges.

Here we present our favorites:

The Pitahaya cactus flowers only once and only at night

Pitahaya

A cactus with big deep red fruits. The fruit has a sweet and round taste with a fresh sour touch, and is very delicious when eaten directly.

The most common uses, however, are for soft drinks and ice cream.

We also appreciate the plant for its impressing big flowers. It only flowers at night, and each flower only once, so you have to be present at the right night.

Guanabana - Anona squamosa - almost ready for harvest

Guanábana

The absolute favorite of the small beings. Plenty of types of ants, fungus and bees are very keen of our plantation and enjoy all stages of the development from bud to mature fruit.
But meanwhile we succeed in getting our part. From the fresh, white pulp with an sour-sweet taste we make drinks and cakes. We also experiment with guanabana wine - but can still not public any result.

Red Mango (mango de rosa)

Mango

A well known tropical fruit which prefarable should be eaten the same day it is cut. Mangos are now sold in supermarkets all over the world, but those are not compareable with the fruits you eat directly from the trees.

We also use mangos for jam and sauces - and even the green mangos as a vegetable.

When the weather supports us, we have fresh mangos from March through August.
