Get behind the furniture shops

Half day trip: From tree to shop

Wood carving Nandasmo Along the highway from Catarina to Masatepe you can count almost one hundred exhibitions of wooden furniture.

To supply these stores there exist around 400 small enterprises in the area, they are dedicated to cutting trees, sawing and transporting the wood, and to making furniture.

The wood comes from local sources such as surplus shade trees in the coffee farms, from fences and from yards. As wood is in high demand, local people are very well aware of taking care of every little, new plant of any valuable tree species. That is the reason why the increasing demand of wood from the carpenters has not affected the forest like environment of the zone. On the contrary, the density of trees is increasing.
